I've been testing the latest version of Midjourney (version 6.1), and I have to say it's made a pretty big leap towards in achieving hyper-realism.
The implications for the fashion sector are very positive. During my initial testing, I think one of the standout features of this version is its ability to render skin, hair, and textures with unprecedented accuracy (mostly!). This quality improvement in close-up detail brings a new dimension to digital fashion design. And it allows designers to create and showcase their ideas in a way that was previously unthinkable.
Despite its impressive advancements, Midjourney V6.1 isn't without its quirks though.
Some users have noted that it sometimes hallucinates in the background, introducing elements that weren't actually intended. I've seen this too in my testing, but these minor glitches do little to overshadow the overall brilliance of the update. The realism achieved in the core components (skin, hair, and textures), makes these occasional oddities a small price to pay.

It's also worth noting, at the time of writing (1st August 2024) version 6.1 does not yet offer an inpainting / outpainting model, so for features like zoom, reframe, repaint, and vary region you will still need the V6.0 model. But we expect this to follow soon into the latest model.
The impact of Midjourney V6.1 on the fashion industry is profound. Designers can now visualise their concepts with a level of detail that closely mirrors real-life people, fabrics and materials. This will transform everything from initial design phases to final presentations, making the creative process more efficient and effective than ever. The potential for more accurate prototyping also means fewer physical samples, reducing waste and speeding up production times. What's not to love?
Another benefit of being able to create these highly realistic 'digital models' lies in the possibility of creating ultra-realistic virtual fashion shows and digital marketing campaigns. Imagine a world where potential buyers can see and almost feel the texture of a garment through their screens. This heightened sense of realism can lead to more informed purchasing decisions (and thus reducing returns), and a more immersive online shopping experience.

I've been testing each version of Midjourney since the start. And with this update, I think we're almost at 100% realism - which is fantastic news for digital fashion professionals.
