AI Struts Its Stuff in Viral Video: How Was This Catwalk Video Made?

Imagine Steve Jobs sashaying down a runway in his iconic turtleneck, followed by Bill Gates sporting a 'blue screen of death' laptop. No, you're not dreaming – you've just stumbled upon the latest AI-generated sensation that's set the internet ablaze!

Watch the video... and then read how they did it below!

The Viral Sensation

On 22nd July 2024, Elon Musk shared a video on his X (formerly Twitter) account that's got everyone talking. The caption? "High time for an AI fashion show". And boy, did it deliver!

This mind-bending spectacle, originally created by the YouTube channel Interdimensional TV, features an array of tech moguls, business tycoons, and world leaders strutting their stuff on a virtual catwalk. It's a delightful mash-up of high fashion, tech culture, and political satire that's captured the imagination of millions.

The Brains Behind the Brilliance

So, who's responsible for this digital delight? The creative minds at Interdimensional TV have outdone themselves, leveraging two powerful AI tools:

1. Midjourney: This AI image generator is known for producing stunningly detailed and realistic images from text prompts. By the way - if you don't know how to use it yet, there's a FREE course for beginners here!

2. Luma Labs: Specialising in AI-powered 3D modelling and animation, this tool likely brought the static images to life.

The result? A seamless blend of the familiar and the fantastical that's both hilarious and slightly unsettling.

The Star-Studded (Virtual) Guest List

The video is a veritable who's who of tech and politics. Here's a rundown of some of the most memorable appearances:

  • Steve Jobs: The late Apple co-founder makes a ghostly appearance in his trademark black turtleneck.

  • Bill Gates: Microsoft's main man struts his stuff with a laptop displaying the infamous 'Blue Screen of Death' – a cheeky nod to recent Microsoft outages.

  • Mark Zuckerberg: In a nod to conspiracy theories, the Meta CEO dons a rather dashing lizard suit.

  • Tim Cook: Apple's current CEO sports an iPad necklace – because why not?

  • Elon Musk: The man himself appears in a futuristic Tesla and X-themed superhero outfit.

  • Jeff Bezos: Amazon's founder makes an appearance, though I'll leave his outfit as a surprise for you to discover!

World leaders aren't left out of the fun either. We're treated to Joe Biden in a wheelchair and shades, Donald Trump in prison stripes, and Indian PM Narendra Modi in a multicoloured long coat that would make Joseph and his Technicolor Dream-coat jealous.

The Numbers Game

The video's popularity has skyrocketed faster than a SpaceX rocket. As of 22nd July 2024, it had racked up:

- Over 34 million views on X

- Nearly 40 million views according to another source

- A whopping 43.5 million views as per a third report

The Bigger Picture for Fashion & Tech

While this video is undoubtedly a bit of fun, it raises some interesting questions about the future of fashion, technology, and media:

  1. AI in Fashion: Could AI-generated fashion shows become a thing? It certainly opens up possibilities for designers to showcase outlandish concepts without the constraints of physical materials.

  2. Digital Influencers: We already have virtual influencers like Lil Miquela. Could we see more AI-generated celebrities in the future?

  3. Media Literacy: As AI-generated content becomes more realistic, how do we ensure people can distinguish between real and artificial media?

  4. Ethical Considerations: What are the implications of using real people's likenesses in AI-generated content without their permission? Also see our recent post about the ethical dilemma of AI and fashion.

Food for Thought

As fashion professionals, this video offers a unique perspective on the intersection of technology and fashion. It's not just about the clothes, but about how we present and consume fashion content.

So, I leave you with these questions:

🤔 How might AI tools like Midjourney and Luma Labs be incorporated into your design process?

🤔 Could AI-generated fashion shows complement traditional runway shows?

🤔 What ethical guidelines should be in place for using AI in fashion marketing and promotion?
