The fashion industry is experiencing a significant shift as the intersection of technology and creativity continues to be explored. This integration is highlighted through a recent collaboration between Hong Kong and the UK, which showcases AI-designed garments at the 'Culture x AI' event at London's V&A Museum.
A New Era in Fashion
At the event we saw five fashion creatives come together with the art of Kan Tai Keung, and an AI tool called 'AiDa.' The AI tool, developed by Calvin Wong and his team at the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design (AiDLabs) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was designed to assist designers in the inspiration phase of the design process. The team aims to help designers, whether experienced or new, to gain inspiration using technology.
"The tool is not meant to replace designers," says Wong, "but to facilitate their work."
By inputting a mood board as reference and requesting AI to design, designers receive visual ideas that can be taken to a pattern maker for the final blueprint. Wong emphasises that the tool has already reduced the time spent in this stage by 70%.
Showcasing AI's Potential
The event displayed 20 AI-designed garments, each reflecting a different aspect of Keung's ink-wash artistry. Each designer, including Derek Chan, Wilson Choi, Tak Lee, Sophia XinLi, and Aries Spin, had the opportunity to engage with Keung's artwork and incorporate it into the AI-generated designs. This collaboration aimed to demonstrate how technology can enhance creativity rather than replace it.
Keung, who worked as a tailor before embarking on a design career, shares his insight on the collaborative process:
"I told them, don't just use the design the AI produces, add your own thoughts."
Subscription and Security
Interestingly, designers can access AiDa on a subscription basis, either monthly for $50 or annually for $500, with a five-day free trial available. The tool ensures the security of user's intellectual property by not reusing designs or outputs - which is a really useful addition to the technology.
Conclusion
The 'Culture x AI' event is a significant step in the evolution of fashion, integrating technology with traditional design methods. This fusion promises to pave the way for innovative and future-forward designs while embracing AI as a tool rather than a competitor to human creativity.
