Extra time to be more creative

If you’ve ever burned half a day nudging repeats or juggling screenshots into yet‑another mood board, Adobe’s April 2025 drop is about to feel like someone’s handed you an extra pattern‑cutter, giving you extra time. Illustrator 29.5’s new Text‑to‑Pattern and Generative Shape Fill tools (both powered by Firefly) build clean, fully‑editable vectors in seconds, while Firefly Boards (now in public beta) corrals your references, prompts and colour chips on a single canvas. The result? Less donkey work, faster approvals and more time to finesse silhouette and fit.

What actually landed in the April 2025 update

1. Text‑to‑Pattern – instant seamless repeats

Type a prompt, get six vector swatches. Firefly’s Vector Model pipes the artwork straight into Illustrator’s Swatches panel, so you can scale, recolour or dissect the motif like any hand‑drawn repeat. Adobe Help CenterAdobe Newsroom

Designer payoff: Fabric print ideas that used to take half a day now spin up in minutes, and you keep full editability—critical when merch asks for a colourway tweak at 5 p.m.

2. Generative Shape Fill + Text‑to‑Vector Graphic

Select the front panel of a tech flat, describe the motif (“psychedelic eye in the sky, with rainbow repeated print design”), and Illustrator fills it with editable vectors that respect your current palette. Adobe Help Center

Designer payoff: No more scouring stock sites for filler graphics during a crunch; you can iterate in situ on the artboard.

3. Dimension Tool for tech‑flats

A new Measure fly‑out lets you drop graded POMs directly on‑artboard—millimetres, centimetres or inches—without third‑party plug‑ins. Adobe Help CenterAdobe Help Center

Designer payoff: Cleaner tech packs, fewer questions from factories about “which point did you measure?”

4. Five‑times faster effects & menus

Menus, blend modes and live effects have been re‑architected, so those monster 600 MB print files stop choking your laptop. Adobe Help CenterAdobe Newsroom

Designer payoff: Less time watching the spinning beach‑ball, more time perfecting placement prints.

What about IP and the EU AI Act?

Firefly models are trained on Adobe Stock, public‑domain and licensed data, so Illustrator labels output “commercially safe”. Adobe NewsroomAdobe
