Midjourney recently rolled out a video feature that allows users to generate short video clips from prompts, building on its core image generation engine. It’s a bold move, potentially encroaching on FreePik, Kling, RunwayML and Pika territory, but with a distinct aesthetic edge.

Here’s what fashion professionals and creative teams should know before getting started.

What It Does Well

  • Visual Aesthetic: The motion has the same painterly, surreal polish that Midjourney images are known for. It’s great for mood piecesdream sequences, and avant-garde style experiments.

  • Simplicity: The interface is as user-friendly as you'd expect – no need to wrestle with complex parameters to get something visually rich.

  • Creative Ideation Tool: For early-stage designers and visual storytellers, it’s a quick way to visualise a concept before investing time in photo shoots or animation.

  • For Photographers and Marketeers: It's the perfect storyboard maker, without having to fork-out for scouting trips.

  • X4 Video Option Styles: X2 automatic, one with slow and the other with energetic vibes, and X2 manual controls that allow you to play with the prompt.

Limitations

  • Motion is Shallow: The video clips are currently around 4 seconds long and feel more like moving posters than true cinematic storytelling. There’s no coherent narrative or meaningful scene transition yet. But you can extend your clip which is frankly, a game changer.

  • No Control Over Timing or Cuts: You can’t direct camera movement, lighting changes, or scene edits in any granular way.

  • Not Yet Suitable for Commercial Use: Unless you’re doing something highly stylised or abstract, it’s still more moodboard than marketing asset.

Use Case for Fashion Brands

  • Mini Mood Videos: Great for adding a sense of movement to moodboards, brand decks, or Instagram teasers.

  • Pre-vis: If you're pitching a campaign concept, this adds visual flair to static decks.

  • Not Yet a Replacement: This won’t replace your creative studio or production crew just yet – but it can certainly feed into the process.

Three Prompt Ideas to Try Now

(We created our own Midjourney Images before sending them to video)

  • Close-up shot: A model stands confidently in front of a railways siding/wall. The camera remains static, highlighting his sparkling eyes and striking features and the expensive streetwear jacket he is wearing. The lights from a passing train carriage add a sense of motion to the scene, soft, diffused lighting enhances the moody atmosphere.(To test stylised close-up movement and lighting adherence)

  • “An 8K video shot for Fashion Week of a fashion runway in a Parisian street at night, with rain-slick cobblestones, soft spotlight on brutalist minimalism, minimalist Medici style polished poplin self fabric belted dresses in rich jewel-like saturated colours evoking Renaissance and cinematic runway vibes(To simulate motion and environmental interaction)

  • Close-up shot: A model stands confidently in front of ornate wallpaper that has shadows playing on it. The camera remains static, highlighting her striking features and the luxurious textured clothing and leather handbag strap over her shoulder. Soft, diffused lighting enhances the elegant atmosphere.(To explore textures and product material visualisation)

Verdict

Midjourney video is exciting, but don’t be fooled by the hype. It’s not yet a filmmaking tool – it’s a conceptual enhancement for ideation and storytelling. Worth using if you’re visually literate and need to add depth to your presentations, but not yet ready for prime time.

In our humble opinion, just like OpenAI, Midjourney has gone overboard with Strict Moderation, so if you are a Swimwear or Lingerie Designer you're pretty much hobbled. We have petitioned Midjourney, to add a legal age check and disclaimer so that creativity isn't stifled. We encourage you to do the same as censorship is the tool of tyrants. Even if they are Geeks!

But, back on topic, Midjourney's launch of Video is fabulous and we encourage you to explore its features and capabilities. We love it!
